This animal might be the only thing keeping them going, and seperation from them becomes another obstacle to overcome on their path to healing from abuse. Studies show separation from a pet during times of trauma or great difficulty, can have a profound negative impact and leave the survivor susceptible to significant depression, anxiety and other negative mental health outcomes.
